    Comprehensive Analysis

    1) "Whitehall" -- As to whitehall lane

    White·hall
    Pronunciation: 'hwIt-"hol, 'wIt-
    Function: noun
Etymology: Whitehall, thoroughfare of London in which are located the chief offices of British government
    : the British government
    Pronunciation Symbols

Whitehall, London, looking south towards the Houses of Parliament. The tower is Victoria Tower.

Whitehall is a road in Westminster in London, England. It is the main artery running north from Parliament Square, centre of national government, towards traditional Charing Cross, now at the southern end of Trafalgar Square and marked by the statue of Charles I, which is often regarded as the heart of London. The road is lined with government ministries; "Whitehall" is therefore also frequently used as a metonym for governmental administration, as well as being a geographic name for the surrounding district.

The name is taken from the vast Palace of Whitehall that used to occupy the area but which was largely destroyed by fire in 1698. Whitehall was originally a wide road that ran up to the front of the palace. Trafalgar Square was built at its northern extremity in the early 19th century. The southernmost part by Parliament Square is Parliament Street, however there is no longer any obvious distinction between the two on the ground. Combined, the streets cover a total distance of about 1 km (0.6 mile).

Parliament Street was a small side road alongside the palace leading to the Palace of Westminster. When the palace was destroyed and its ruins demolished, Parliament Street was widened to match Whitehall's width. The present appearance of the street is largely the result of 19th century redevelopment.

The Banqueting House, built in 1622 by Inigo Jones, is the only surviving portion of the former palace. Charles I was executed on 30 January 1649 on a scaffold erected outside the building, stepping onto it from a first-floor window. Royalists still commemorate the regicide annually on the anniversary of the execution.

For people named Lane and other uses of the word, see Lane (disambiguation).

The word lane has two meanings:

    1. a portion of a paved road which is intended for a single line of vehicles and is marked by white or yellow lines. This article elaborates only on this meaning.
    2. a narrow road, usually lacking a shoulder or a median. The word is typically applied to roads in the countryside, but can also be applied to urban streets, like Drury Lane in London. In North America, the term often refers to rear access roads, often unpaved, that act as a secondary vehicular network in cities and towns. Large cities in the U.S. states of Nevada and Texas tend to apply the term to many arterial roads[citation needed]. Also see alley.

In contrast to countries such as India, most countries with a significant number of motor vehicles have lane markings on their freeways, highways, and other types of paved road. A marked lane is a control device to guide drivers so that conflicts during passing are kept to a minimum. Lane markings also facilitate orderly queuing when drivers must stop and wait before proceeding.

When lanes are marked, drivers are usually required to keep their vehicle within the lines unless passing or turning. In many countries, a prolonged inability to stay in one's lane is considered to be a symptom of driving under the influence and may lead to a citation or arrest for a moving violation.
